M. Chapoutier Les Granilites Saint-Joseph Blanc 2020 is an elegant, mineral-driven white from the Northern Rhône's Saint-Joseph appellation. "Les Granilites" (sometimes spelled "Les Granits" in references) highlights the granite-rich soils of the southern part of the appellation, particularly parcels around Mauves and the lower Saint-Joseph lieu-dit. These soils impart taut minerality and freshness to the wine. It's a step up in the Chapoutier lineup from the entry-level wines you've inquired about, showcasing the house's biodynamic farming and focus on terroir expression.

Blend and Production

  • Primarily Marsanne (dominant) with some Roussanne.
  • 2020 was a warm, generous vintage in the Northern Rhône, yielding ripe fruit balanced by the granite terroir's natural acidity and structure.
  • Grapes are hand-harvested, pressed directly, and undergo cold settling. Fermentation occurs in 600L casks with natural yeasts. Aging lasts about 8 months: roughly 75% in stainless steel or tanks to preserve freshness and minerality, with a portion in oak (including some lees stirring early on to build texture without heavy oxidation or overt wood influence). This results in a wine with volume yet lively tension.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Golden yellow with bright green highlights.
  • Nose: Fragrant and complex — ripe lemons, Anjou pear, white-fleshed fruits (peaches, apricots), white flowers (honeysuckle, iris, lily), almond, vanilla paste, subtle smoke/flint/mineral notes, honeyed stone fruit, and hints of spice or wax.
  • Palate: Fresh and balanced attack with good volume and "gourmand" (dessert-like) notes of creamed apple, melon, honeyed peach, and white currants. It offers vibrant lemony acidity, mineral tautness/spine, spice (ginger, white mocha), and a long, polished, salty-mineral finish with floral and smoky depth. Medium-bodied, pure, seamless, and harmonious — ripe yet nimble, with excellent freshness for the vintage.

Critics scored it highly: 91 points Wine Enthusiast, 93 points Wine Spectator (noting its fragrant, floral, smoky profile with a honeyed, mineral-rich finish; drink now through 2028+)
