Pazo Torre Penelas is Familia Torres's Rías Baixas estate, acquired in 2017 and launched by the fifth generation of the 150+ year old Catalan family (also behind Miguel Torres, Jean Leon, Marimar Estate). The 14th-century pazo (manor house) sits in Val do Salnés with 6 hectares of Albariño planted 1985–2005, surrounded by stone walls, granary, dovecote, and chapel. Winemaker: Víctor Cortizo. Familia Torres is a B Corp and a leader in regenerative viticulture.
This Wine
Fruit is a blend of the estate's Salnés vines plus purchased grapes from Salnés and O'Rosal (the two subzones balance each other — O'Rosal's warmth/roundness against Salnés's slower-ripening, higher-acid character). Cold macerated 6 hours, then fermented and aged in stainless steel at 15–16°C. 12.5% ABV. 2024 was a wetter-than-average vintage (+30% rainfall vs. historical norm).
Tasting notes: luminous straw color with golden highlights; nose of white flowers, pineapple, crisp apple, zesty lemon, other notes describe a slightly reductive/mineral opening (phosphorus, soft flowers) opening into lime and apple. Medium-bodied, high acidity, silky texture, saline finish.
Scores: 93 pts International Wine Challenge (2024 vintage); 92 pts and $22 average per other trade sources; prior vintages picked up 90 pts (Decanter, James Suckling) and Best of Show Rías Baixas at Mundus Vini (2022).
Food Pairings
Galician/Atlantic seafood is the natural lane: octopus (pulpo a la gallega), grilled shrimp, oysters, ceviche, empanada gallega. Also works with goat cheese, Vietnamese/Thai dishes (lemongrass, herbs), and roast chicken.
Certifications
Organic — several US retailers (K&D Wines) list the 2023/2024 vintages explicitly as Organic. Parent company Familia Torres holds B Corp certification and is a driver of regenerative viticulture practice in the region.
