Vigneti La Selvanella Chianti Classico Riserva 2020
One vineyard. One wine. Since 1969.

The story
Most Chianti estates make a lot of wines. This one makes exactly one. Vigneti La Selvanella is a single 50-hectare block of Sangiovese in Radda in Chianti, the largest vineyard in the village and the largest cru in Chianti Classico. The first Riserva was the 1969. The 1971 was picked as the Chianti League’s representative wine in a 1975 blind tasting. It was also an early Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri winner.

In the glass
Bright ruby with garnet edges. The nose is ripe berry, violet, iris and a touch of balsam. The palate is savory and warm, with forest floor and toasted almond on a long finish. The tannins are dusty and fine, so it has grip without being hard.

On the table
Bistecca or a good ribeye, braised short ribs, mushroom risotto, wild game, aged pecorino. It also stands up to a Texas brisket.

Wine Dad tip
Open it 30 minutes ahead and serve at 64–68°F in a big glass. It drinks well now, and Wine Spectator’s window runs to 2038.
