Barolo country’s grower makes a white you can pour with dinner tonight.
The Story
Sergio Germano farms in Serralunga d’Alba, at the edge of the Barolo zone. The winery carries his father Ettore’s name, and the family’s winemaking roots go back to 1856. Sergio trained at the enology school in Alba, made wine at Fontanafredda, then came home in 1993. Barolo is what Germano is known for. This Chardonnay comes from his Cigliè vineyards, the same fruit he uses for his Alta Langa sparkling wine. It’s the same hands and the same care, in a bottle you can open on a Tuesday.
In the Glass
Straw yellow. Golden apple and peach on the nose, with a little citrus and a soft hint of butter. The palate has real structure and a bright, fresh acidity, and the finish is clean. Aging is mostly stainless steel, with some oak treatment.
On the Table
- Gulf shrimp, grilled or in a boil
- Redfish or speckled trout with lemon butter
- Chicken enchiladas verdes
- Roast chicken or pork loin
- Fresh cheeses, such as queso fresco, burrata and goat cheese
Wine Dad Tip
Serve at 50–54°F, so pull it from the fridge 10 minutes before pouring. No decanting needed. Drink it over the next 1-2 years while it’s fresh.
