The winery. Château d'Esclans is in Provence near Saint-Tropez, founded in its modern form in 2006 when Sacha Lichine (son of Alexis Lichine, the Bordeaux négociant legend) bought the estate and set out to prove rosé could be a serious, age-worthy wine rather than a summer afterthought. He basically kicked off the modern luxury-rosé category — Whispering Angel became the reference point for the whole segment.

Rock Angel sits above Whispering Angel and below the top-tier Les Clans and Garrus — Lichine's team calls it the "older sibling" to Whispering Angel: a touch of oak-aged component blended in for more texture and structure.

The wine. Grenache and Rolle (Vermentino), partial fermentation/aging in 600-liter oak barrels blended back with stainless-steel-fermented lots, triple-sorted fruit (optical and hand-sorted). Tasting notes: pale, almost transparent color; red berry and floral aromatics with mineral and subtle spice; rich, racy palate with a creamy texture from the oak, firm acidity, flinty minerality, long silky finish. Decanter gave it 92 points, Wine Spectator 90.

Food pairings: this one can handle more than a beach salad — seared tuna, salmon, roast chicken, Provençal dishes with herbs and olive oil. Given the format, though, the real pairing here is the occasion itself — this is a tableside/event showpiece, not a bottle you crack open on a Tuesday.

Certifications: HVE Level 3 (Haute Valeur Environnementale) since 2023 — France's top environmental tier — plus a stated no-pesticide, no-herbicide farming approach under Moët Hennessy's "Living Soils Living Together" program.
