Producer

  • The Povero family has lived on the land in Cisterna d'Asti since 1837, and the winery was started in 1964 by Giovanni and Michelino Povero. Alessio Povero now runs it as the third generation. The grandfather planted the first vineyard in 1948.
  • Their vineyards spread across the Roero, Langhe and Monferrato appellations, at about 320 meters in elevation.
  • The winery has solar panels on the roof, uses water from an old family well, and is planting trees toward a 1:1 forest-to-vineyard ratio.

Wine

  • 100% Nebbiolo, Barolo DOCG, aged 28 months in oak barrels.
  • It's a young Barolo, so I'd decant it.

Tasting notes

  • Winery: violet, cassis, wild rose, cinnamon, anise, leather and goudron, with hints of truffle, dried mushroom and hazelnut. The palate is warm, dry, earthy and full.
  • Critic note on the 2021: sweet, juicy black cherries, candied orange peel and rose petal.
  • Style: tar and rose, with firm tannins and bright acidity. It's a classic Barolo, not a plush one.

Pairings

  • The winery suggests stew, wild game, beef cheek braised in Barolo, Castelmagno or Toma cheese, truffle tagliatelle and roasted duck.
  • I'd add ribeye, short ribs and mushroom risotto. For Texas, try smoked brisket.

Certifications

  • Organic farming began in 1998, and all vineyards were certified organic in 2019.
  • The wines are certified vegan and follow the Equalitas sustainability standard.
