The winery. Jack and Dolores Cakebread were high school sweethearts from Oakland who bought a 22-acre Rutherford ranch in 1972 — Jack financed the down payment with a $2,500 photography advance (he'd been hired to shoot a wine book) while still running his family's Oakland car repair shop nights and weekends. Their very first release, in 1973, was a Chardonnay — just 157 cases. 2023 marks the 50th vintage since that original 1973 bottling — so this exact wine is the golden-anniversary heir to the wine that started the whole winery. Jack and Dolores have both since passed (Dolores in 2020, Jack in 2022), but the family — Bruce as President/COO, Dennis as Vice-Chairman — still runs it, with Niki Williams joining as Director of Winemaking in 2023.

Certifications: Cakebread was the second winery in Napa to achieve Napa Green certification, back in 2008 — real pioneer status, not a recent bandwagon move. They also hold International Wineries for Climate Action (IWCA) accreditation, farm organically, use falcons for pest control, and are targeting carbon neutrality by 2030.

The wine. 100% Chardonnay from Carneros, at Napa's cool southern edge — morning Pacific fog slows ripening and preserves acidity, Haire Loam soils naturally keep vine vigor in check.

Tasting notes: light golden color, pear and chamomile aromas, melon, lemon curd and apple on the palate, baking spice and toasted brioche, balanced oak, fresh citrus finish. Ken's Wine Guide scored it 92.5/91.5 — a strong, well-reviewed showing.

Food pairings: Roast chicken, creamy pasta (carbonara is the standing rec), fresh sourdough, crab cakes, grilled halibut, lobster rolls — a genuinely versatile food Chardonnay, not just a sipper.
